چکیده
Abstract Overstory basal area, ericaceous shrub cover ( Kalmia latifolia L. and Rhododendron maximum L.), fuels (i.e., woody fuel loads depths O Horizon thickness) were assessed within Great Smoky Mountains National Park, USA, in 2003 − 2004. Due to recent wildfire activity the southern Appalachian Mountain region (including Park), potential spread expansion of shrubs, impacts hemlock woolly adelgid Adelges tsugae Annand) on eastern Tsuga canadensis (L.) Carrière), these same ecosystem components again 2019. Elevation moisture regime (xeric, intermediate, mesic) included this assessment as influential factors. An evaluation repeated measurements from 40 plots suggested that thickness did not change significantly over 16-year period, but increased elevation increased, (xeric > mesic was a significant, related factor. The sum 1-, 10-, 100-h (fuels less < 7.6 cm diameter) whereas depth decreased period. No significant changes 1000-h (> diameter), total loads, cover, or live T. area observed. Live with increasing elevation. Dead, standing 2003–2019, increase most pronounced xeric intermediate sites. Overall, we found that: 1. hypothesized increases present; 2. observed vegetation condition.

Spring and Autumn Phenological Variability across Environmental Gradients of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, USA
Mountainous regions experience complex phenological behavior along climatic, vegetational and topographic gradients. In this paper, we use a MODIS time series of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) to understand the causes of variations in spring and autumn timing from 2000 to 2015, for a landscape renowned for its biological diversity. By filtering for cover type, topography and ...
متن کاملImpacts of climatic and atmospheric changes on carbon dynamics in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
We used the Dynamic Land Ecosystem Model (DLEM) to estimate carbon (C) storage and to analyze the impacts of environmental changes on C dynamics from 1971 to 2001 in Great Smoky Mountain National Park (GRSM). Our simulation results indicate that forests in GRSM have a C density as high as 15.9kgm(-2), about twice the regional average. Total carbon storage in GRSM in 2001 was 62.2Tg (T=10(12)), ...

متن کاملBeyond Management and Sustainability: Visitor Experiences of Physical Accessibility in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, USA
The National Center on Accessibility sponsored this study to identify the perceptions and attitudes of people with physical disabilities toward their experiences related to physical accessibility in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. A total of 300 questionnaires were distributed to individuals with disabilities onsite. Of these questionnaires, 122 completed and usable questionnaires were...
متن کاملRarity and Diversity in Forest Ant Assemblages of Great Smoky Mountains National Park
We report on a systematic survey of the ant fauna occurring in hardwood forests in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. At 22-mixed hardwood sites, we collected leaf-litter ant species using Winkler samplers. At eight of those sites, we also collected ants using pitfall and Malaise traps. In total, we collected 53 ant species. As shown in other studies, ant species richness tended to declin...
